Reading

At the Samui Bilingual School, we begin literacy learning from preschool, adapting our teaching to the individual pace of each child. This early method promotes a solid understanding of phonemes and graphemes, as well as an enrichment of vocabulary from a young age. Children are encouraged to read alone or share their discoveries with their peers, thus cultivating the joy of reading.

Foundations of Learning:

The core of our pedagogy is based on the mastery of phonemes, the sound units of language, and graphemes, the written representations of these sounds. This dual learning effectively supports long-term reading comprehension through playful activities initiated in kindergarten and continued in primary school.

Dynamic Reading Sessions:

We highly value reading moments, offering students numerous opportunities to immerse themselves in books. By listening to reading, kindergarten students enrich their vocabulary and syntactic understanding, thus facilitating access to independent reading. This virtuous process allows students to continuously expand their language proficiency, increasing their enjoyment of reading and listening to texts.

Development of Reading in Elementary:

In primary school, this reading dynamic is not only maintained but also deepened:

Read Aloud: In a welcoming environment, reading aloud allows children to share impactful readings, thus strengthening the bond between students around the joy of reading.
Collective Reading Times: Times for silent reading are organized, during which each person, including the teacher, reads a book of their choice, respecting the calm necessary for this activity. This practice, inspired by "Living books," extends to various disciplines, enriching the educational experience.
Constant Access to Books: Our school ensures permanent access to a variety of books, both in classrooms and in kindergarten and primary school libraries, encouraging children to freely explore literature while respecting moments of collective work.

At the Samui Bilingual School, we believe that developing a passion for reading from a young age paves the way for continuous learning, awakening curiosity and critical thinking in students to prepare them for a promising future.
