Writing
Writing learning begins at Samui Bilingual School from the toddler section onwards, through sensory-motor, artistic, and manual activities (punching, sewing, drawing) that enhance precision in movement.
Writing is refined in kindergarten around graphics.
The quality of written language is focused on in elementary, through encouragement of individual or collective writing tasks. WORKING THE HAND FROM A YOUNG AGE
In the toddler section of our bilingual kindergarten, children are invited to use materials that engage the hand (so-called "practical life" and "sensorimotor" materials created by Maria Montessori).
GRAPHICS
This work continues in other bilingual kindergarten classes through the discovery of graphics and work on holding writing tools. Spontaneous attempts at writing are encouraged by providing various types of supports (slates, notebooks, blackboards).
FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THE FOCUS IS ON 4 POINTS
- A good understanding of grammar mechanisms (word placement and role in the sentence, logic of grammatical constraints).
- Attention to the quality of spelling, with regular self-correcting dictations.
- Regular writing through the maintenance of the class's Century Book (see Humanities) and a school journal written, with teachers' help, by the students.
- Encouragement of free writing through writing workshops, fostering imagination, and a short story prize for the older classes.
In parallel, at Samui Bilingual School, in kindergarten and elementary, work is done to allow children to achieve good mastery of language and a rich vocabulary thus facilitating their ability to transcribe their ideas in writing while encouraging their imagination.
